Busted Mast

I have a '74 Catalina 22 that was demasted in Hurricane Frances. The mid supports must have gone first because I have a relatively clean break right at the middle. I'm not a racer, but want a safe boat. Is there any way to repair this? By the way, the boat was sunk in hurricane Jeane, so now I also need a pop-top, seat lids, and keel work. Fortunately the hull is still in solid. Any lines on replacement mast and other stuff would be helpful. Thanks

Replace the mast

. . . don't try to repair it. You should be able to transfer much of the hardware from the old mast to the new one. Hint for future hurricanes: It is a trailerable boat, so get it out of harms way. Regards, Ted

Is it insured?

Is the boat insured? Can you total it and get a fair price? You have a lot of work ahead of you just finding the parts. Then you have to pay for the parts, and re-install them. It may be much cheaper and less hassle to just buy a new C22.

Insurance Companys say boats too old

Couldn't find insurance for a boat older than 25 years.

Transfer

Does the hardware from the '74 mast transfer to the newer one in the Catalina Direct catalog? One is '80-'84 and the other is '84-> There is no new mast directly for the older models as far as I can tell.

Replacement mast

Given the carnage left by four bad storms in your area, there are probably some C22s that suffered in the other direction -- hulls trashed but spars intact. Check e-bay and visit the local marinas. Put a want ad in your local 'give away' publications. With a little luck you may find exactly what you need.
