burst mast struts

I have a 2005 Hunter 25. While rigging the boat this year, I noticed that the mast struts have burst ... cracked open! I have a second set of struts, but I'm wondering if anyone has encountered this and what the likely source of the problem might be.

What's a mast strut? Are you talking about the spreaders?

a picture would be great.

Burst Struts

I can't say for sure, but my first insinct would be water intrusion over the winter. They filled with water, froze, and burst. I've had similar issues with stanchions. While they didn't burst, they did push a plastic center core up into the lifelines. It's amazing the amount of pressure that freezing, expanding water can create. When you install the new struts, I'd look to see if they have some sort of drain hole towards the bottom. If not, I'd start drilling. That's what I did on the stanchions. Landsend - the struts are supports on the newer trailerable boats that support the mast near the base and facilitate stepping the mast. T J Furstenau

Frozen water is powerful!

Interesting .... I've had the same issue with my stanchions too! I do plan on drilling small drain holes in them. Last time I removed them, water drained out! Same holds true for part of my pedestal guard rail, hard to explain, but the water collects in part of mine. Chris
