We have a 82' Catalina 38. The previous owner suggest burping the PSS shaft seal as part of the Spring Commisioning. What do you think? How do you do this?

It's A Must

The idea is to get all the air out when the boat has been out of the water. All you do is to push the bellows back (aft) for a second to let the water flow out and release the trapped air. That's it... the easiest thing you ever did for spring! Rick D.

Be Prepared

to get wet as the water pressure is unbelievable. Matter of fact cover the area with a towel as you burb the seal.

Thanks

Thanks for your response. I am assuming this is done when the boat is back in the water? Can you give me a little more detail? How will I know that the air got out? Does it really Birp?

Burbing the seal

All you are doing is letting any air that was trapped in the pocket created by the shaft cover. This is done after the boat is back in the water. What air that is trapped will come out along with water spray. As I said, it will happen fast as it is under lots of pressure. Protect yourself from the water spray or it will get you wet. Good luck.
