Bung in top of centerboard housing.

In my O'Day 25, About midway on the top of the centerboard housing there is a bung, or that is what it appears to be. The lower side is also visible from inside the centerboard cavity. Does anyone have any idea what the purpose is? Is it a potential leak?

All I can say for sure is that my '78 doesn't have one, and that the top of the CB trunk is definitely below-the-waterline. So yes, potential catastrophic leaker.
What type of bung is it? Wine-bottle cork? Levered bung? Screw type (like in the live well of a fishing boat)?
I can't imagine why someone would drill a hole here. It'd be lousy for drainage, as it's several inches above the bottom of the bilge.

My guess is that a previous owner installed that "bung" to allow inserting a stick to nudge the CB down if it gets stuck. Works on my DS II, but not sure I'd try it on a 25!

Thanks guys, that is what I thought, any hole in a boat especially if it near the water and essential will be eliminated. This will be the easiest job yet.
