how does one mount bumpers on a 216 to protect the hull when docking. cleats are only on one side, not both, i don't see what else to tie the bumpers off to.new owner, only one sail, really like it.thanksdoug
Doug, I experienced the same problem with my new boat. I normally sail single handed. After suffering several serious scrapes at restaurant docks, I installed stainless steal hand grips (2' long - West Marine Store)at the widest point on the deck on both sides. As I'm entering the harbor I tie off a bumper on the hand grip on the docking side. I then tie up at the dock using my normal forward and aft lines...works great. In addition, the hand grips help to stabilize myself while sailing in heavy air.
Doug! We had the dealer install fender locks in three locations on the port & starboard gunwales on our 216. They're a flat ss plate with a slot into which a plastic (also ss) peg fits. The peg has an eye that you tie your fender line onto. Very handy to just clip on or take off, West Marine has them. Good Luck.
I have carabiners on my fenders. I attach one fender to the shrouds. I installed an eye strap on the rails approximately 4 feet forward of the stern and attach the other fender there. Eye straps are cheap and quick to install.
The soft, generally cylinder shaped goodies hanging of your boat to protect it from docks or other boats when rafting up are *fenders*. *Bumpers* are the soft items attached to a dock to protect your boat. Needless to say, you need fenders because if there is one missing piece of bumper on a dock with a protruding bolt, this is where you will land.
Doug, If you have decent size fenders (8" dia.), attach them to your rear cleat and your chain plate. Unless you aim the boat nearly directly at the dock, youshould have no problems.
