Bulwarks

Has anyone installed bulwarks? I'm thinking about doing a temporary/permanent install of some bulwarks. Possibly use ss ubolts to screw them to the stanchions. If it looks good, maybe come up with another option.

If nobody else has installed them, has anyone else considered the idea? What are your thoughts in general?

Seems to me that bulwarks would look very much out of place on a Vega. I
can't think of any reason to have them from a practical standpoint.
Maybe you could lash fuel cans and water cans to them if you are doing
long distance cruising or if you do not have a roller furling Gib
bullworks might keep the jib from going overboard. I would think netting
in the life lines would do the same. If you have children or pets on
board netting provides a lot of safty. Early in the last century
boats often were low sided and sailed rail down with decks awash and
bullworks served to protect workers on deck from big waves coming
aboard. A Vega should never be sailed rail down as she was just not
intended to be sailed at such an angle of heel. I would think about it
a little more.

Because last year we were attempting to put a reef in with 30 knts wind and my foot kept wanting to go over the tiny little toerail. I was using jacklines, but would have liked something just a few inches taller. Of course, there ate a few things I could have done offerently, like reef earlier. Well, that makes some sense. A vega should never be rail down. However, Murphy does seem to creep in at the most inopportune times. So, a 2-3 inch bulwarks mounted on the stanchions is the plan for the season. If it looks good and seems to do the trick, I'll design something more permanent, with new stanchion bases and stanchions, and an integral bulwarks.

But thanks for the advice. One can never have too much information. Worst case, if I install them this year with a few u-bolts, I can easily remove them for next year and nobody will ever know they were on there...except for the photos posted to the Photos section.
