I recently discovered some rotten wood on the entior of my 1988 C-22. I suspect it is the result of a leak around the shroud attachments. The rot is in the counter top around the ice box next to the sink and on the bulkhead between the stove and the v-berth. What is involved in making these repairs, particularly the bulkhead next to the stove/v-berth. What type of wood would be best for this application? The boat is on the trailer with the mast down. Cut it out.

A friend of mine just finished this repair on a power boat. it was not a pretty job but it is good to have done. He had to actually cut away and then sand everything from the gelcoat so that the only thing that he had reaming was the unbacked fiberglass and gelcoat. He then used marine grade plywood to replace the wood and then fiberglassed it back into place. Everthing was done from the inside and you can not tell that it was done after the repair. He put a nice layer of glass and gelcoat over the inside area so it does not look to bad. Now if your rot is not involving the fiberglass backing (Hull) and is only in a bulkhead area that is much easier. I took out all my bulkheads this last winter and replaced them with new wood only to get a nice finsh on the wood. I could not sand the playwood enough without going to the core to g et the stains out. I used the old bulkhead as a pattern and then out the new one. regular plywood is fine aslong as you can get a good match to the interior. Not a bad job great to keep you busy when you can't sail in the winter,. Herb

Have same problem - bulkhead rot

That 2x4 foot piece of 1/2 inch plywood between the starboard setee and the V-berth was rotten on my 1980 boat. Since it should be finished on both sides, yesterday I went to Loews's and got a 2x4' piece of 1/2 inch ply that they use to make replacement cabinet doors. I will just put a lot of coats of poly something on it. This is cheaper than buying a 4x8 sheet of 1/2 marine plywood. This is same wood that the mast stay bolt strap anchors to. The DPO did the upgrade on the stay eyelets to 1/2", however, he has them oriented the wrong way. Therefore, I will redo them and check for deck rot, especially around the one that apparently leaked to rot the subject "bulkhead". Anyone have any suggestions? You are probably battening down the hatches soon to welcome Isabel.
