Looking to buy 1983, but lower 3" of bulkhead has some dry rot. how to fix? Is it a structural issue? If mast support post is wood(teak?) would I expect rot there too? Any other issues we need to be aware of. The boat has been in fresh water most of its life (only 1 1/2 years in salt water. Seems very well cared for, is a dry boat with minimal leaks. Stored over one winter with stbd port left open which allowed water to stand in bilge.

Depending on how much dry rot, It could be structural. Just toward the center at the bottom? Both bulkheads. Check the area around where the chainplates are attached. This is where most often the wood is affected. Many of us have replaced the bulkheads because of it. A little rot down low by the compression post might be alright. The compression post itself might be rotted on the bottom. Mine was. All fairly easily replaced. If the rest of the boat is in good shape and the sails are serviceable and the price is right... It's a shame that an oversight like an open port can do much damage after the boat has been looked after all these years.

I'll bet those chainplates leak. And so the deck core around them could be soft. Also check the deck at the mast. If sunken or cracked then you have rot there too. What size O'day?

Replacing my compression post is on the list too. I believe mine is Ash but you can call Rudy over at D & R Marine for more info on that probably.

Good luck!
Hey Dan,
I had forgotten about your refurb. Interior shot on your blog looks great!

Thanks for the help. Area is small but will check chainplates. Boat looks good otherwise.

Thanks! Getting a new main on Wednesday and Rudy is building me a new centerboard. One must pick their battles... She sails but, not as good as she should.
