Bulkhead compass recommendations for O'Day 23

Hi all,

I have an O'Day 23 and need to replace the bulkhead compass. The old compass had a 4 inch diameter hole. I am willing to cut a larger hole, but don't want to go smaller. I purchased a plastismo mini compass 2, but it had a backing piece with nuts. I would have to cut a hole in the interior to access the nut and get the backing plate in place.

What I am looking for is a compass that will screw in and won't require access from the back.

Thanks for any information.

If you do have to cut an interior hole buy one of those teak binocular boxes to cover it. I have an old, probably original, Aquameter compass and some site says the Ritchie Venture SR2 is a replacement. Not sure. I did loose my cover and trying to figure out a replacement. If you could find a backing plate with captive nuts you might be able to pass it from below the seat and glue it in place. I'll be in that area tomorrow (unless I get fatter or feel less flexible ) running wires and will check the access.

Well, I was going to suggest the Plastimo Mini-Contest, but it looks like you already tried one?
RITCHIE is a good grand, and one that O'DAY used originally on many models. (4" Bulkhead mount)

Thanks for the information everyone. Stu, great pointer to the store. LeeandRick, don't get stuck! It's tight down there.

I think building some sort of leveling box is the way to go. That way, I could attach it to the box and then attach the box toffice the bulkhead (which is not exactly vertical. The oldcompass was level through a beveled plastic housing and makes me think it was original.

Again, thanks for all the information that you all provide. I have really learned a lot from this forum.
