Should I pop these bearing protectors off and install "buddy bearings" in their place? I just bought this trailer used (although its only a year old). See attached picture.

Buddy Bearings for H216 trailer

I installed Buddy Bearings on my H216 trailer. I think they are better than the typical bearing cup arrangement that a lot of the trailer manufacturers furnish.

Maybe Not

Hard to tell from the picture is that a zerk fitting behind the cotter pin? If so keep the axle greased through that and do not use the Bearing Buddy.

I'll check

I'll wipe the greese off the cotter pin, remove it, and see if I can inject greese through the hole.

Ditto on what Rick said

Jeff, From the way the cap is made with a little rubber insert in it it looks like you might have spindle-lube spindles. As Rick said if you have a grease fitting in the center of the spindle then all you have to do is pump grease in until it oozes out of the hole where you stick the grease gun onto the fitting. The grease goes through the center of the spindle and comes out at the back side of the inner bearing to keep both bearings lubricated. The rule to remember is pump the grease until it oozes out when you have grease fittings on your spindles.

Zerk Fittings

Our 216 came on a Venture trailer. If you look on the back side of the wheels, there's a zerk on each hub. Grease is forced thru the inboard bearings and the outboard ones. There's a plastic cap on the outside of the hub, take that off and you'll see the grease coming thru.
