Bubble in Compass

I was preparing my B352 for splash down, when I noticed a bubble had formed in my Plastimo compass over the winter. The bubble is about the diameter of a golf ball. On further research, I discovered it is a good idea to remove the compass during the winter, as the temperture range is too wide (the boat is covered during the winter - but it can get hot under the cover). One more sailing lesson, learned the hard way.

I had a brief conversation with a compass repair shop, who have advised the seals are likely shot on the compass, and I should just replace the unit. I have not removed it yet, but there may be a little opening on the bottom to add more compass fluid and remove the bubble. That will likely be less expensive than replacing the unit. That might work as long as I remove it during the winter.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Has anyone replaced a Plastimo compass and if so, where can I get the best deal.

Thanks, Murray

Well for those that are interested, the Plastimo compass needs to be replaced. Its age (expected life of 10 years) combined with wide temperature ranges have blown the seal on the compass. While some compasses have a small opening to add additional fluid (that's another story), the Plastimo Olympic 135 does not and there needs to be completely replaced. Plastimo is not noted for being one of the higher quality compass manufacturers. So I ordered a replacement on line for C$250.00. Now I need to get the old one out of the boat and install the new one. One step at a time.
