Claw or Bruce?

Take this with a grain of salt, because I haven't used either of these anchors myself (I use a delta or Fortress). But I thought I would mention that I recently attended a talk by the local Simpson Lawrence representative, and the question of "what was the difference in these two anchors" came up. If I remember correctly, Bruce used to have a patent on their anchor and could charge what they liked. It has expired, so now they have competition from other manufacturers. I think that physically, there is a difference in the metal alloy used, but both brands claim that theirs is as good or better. And Simpson Lawrence claims to have improved on the stock angle for better setting. Practical Sailor magazine rated the claw almost equal to the Bruce for holding power in sand (not so good compared to other styles of anchors), and the claw rated 6 out of 12 in quick setting in sand (3 for the Bruce).

Anecdotal at best

Lloyd - I sat at West Marine one day recently with a Bruce and Claw in front of me, equal sizes, and really didn't see a difference. The alloy used in the Bruce looks better, but I would expect to pull the anchor out of the ground before you broke either one. For what its worth, I'm getting a claw for my boat. Claw on a 40.5

I feel the claw (33#) is a very good anchor. It looks just like a Bruce and after 3.5 years still looks like new. I have never had it drag. I use it with 28' of 5/16" chain. We have used both the stock 40# Danforth anchor (42' of chain) and the claw a lot on our 40.5 (20,000#) with very good results on the Gulf coast, Southern Calif coast and now the East coast (Chesapeake). This combo gives me many options including using both since it is very easy to deploy them from the dual anchor roller. Save the $ with the Claw and get 22' of chain and your O Day 22 will do fine.

Anyone with Experience with the Delta Quickset?

I was in JSI (the Sailnet people) 's warehouse the other day. They recommended the Delta Quickset as a low-cost alternative to the CQR -- the traditional. It seems cheap enough. I have a 25# CQR (not Simpson Lawrence CQR) on my 37 ft. SL says I need a 35# anchor, while the original CQR folks say 25# is fine.

I've used a Delta for a couple of years.

Debra: I've used one for a couple of years and it is great. I had been using danforths for years which I think are better than the Delta in the sand/mud bottom of our area. The reason that we went with a Delta was because of anchoring in grass/weeds. The danforth will not set well in grass and when you swing it cannot reset because of the double flukes. Everyone should have 2 anchors on board and they should be different types. I think that a plow (delta, cqr, bruce type) and a danforth type are really the best combo. Regardless of the anchor you need plenty of chain.

Practical Sailor Recommendations

Just got this month's issue of Practical Sailor and they have an extensive review of anchors. For mud and sand, they recommend the Spade, Bulwagga, and the CQR.
