I have a bronze cone seacock that no matter how much I tighten it has a slow drip.

I serviced it last year, cleaned it, regreased it and its been working perfectly as the other two.

Up until now with just slight torque on the nut it would not leak

Now all of the sudden now matter how much I tighten it has a slow drip.

The drip apprears between the nut and back plate

Any idea what could be the problem ?

Thanks

Did you lap fit it? What grease did you use? There is special grease made specifically for tapered cone seacocks and made by Spartan Marine.

They ideally need to be done yearly with the right grease. Lap fitting is only an occasional need but if they have not been done in a while then is a good thing to do.

I also have tapered seacocks on Argyle. They were in pretty bad shape, but serviceable, when I bought her. Did the lapping compound/grease from Spartan Marine and they haven't leaked or seized in two years of use.

Note: After you use the lapping compound and grease and you are ready to stow them for the next time you need them, tape the lapping compound to the grease to keep it from tipping over. The reason is, the grit in the lapping compound keeps the lid from forming a good seal, so if it tips over it will leak. If you tape it to the larger and heavier grease, it is less likely to tip over in storage.

mine are not spartan and the handle is not removeable from the tapered cone, the cone and handle are one piece so I won't be able to rotate the cone completely.
hopefully a 270 degree rotation will be enough to get it right.

any idea what make mine might be ?

Is the handle small and round like bar stock? Do they have a cover plate on the handle end with two set screws holding it to the body? Is so then they are likely Groco's.

The older Wilcox Crittenden's has a square male peg on the handle end of the valve and the handle also had a square female hole to mate up with the cone.

Groco's are the ones that come to mind where the handle was not removable.
