Bronze casting

Hi everyone,
Does anyone here do bronze casting or maybe knows of reliable (tested)
source? I need to get a rudder shoe made. I don't have one right now,
but looking at some pictures I think I can make a prototype from epoxy
putty to be used for casting. I'd appreciate any help with this one!
Thank, Arek

I could cast one for you. I am a school shop teacher and I teach
metals. We have a small foundry unit. I would need to find a source
for a good bit of bronze ingots to do the job. Also would need to
pull the heal/shoe off of my Vega. It is on the hard, so that
shouldn't be too hard. Can use that for a pattern. Contact me off
group and we can discuss details. albinvega1493@...

Geetings John, another three minutes every day !!!!I
always feel in some ways, that this is the start of the
sailing season,I mean,that may sound mad,especially
from someone on the north east coast of
England, however I start to "get into gear" right about
now, getting a little more time on the boat every time
I go down to the mooring!

Best Wishes to all Vegan owners ; Bob and Julie Tough

It's good to know I'm not alone. I think I drive my wife a little
nuts 'cause I start counting down towards the end of November, "just
30 more days". Each day a brighter! Sand fleas and sun screen, love
'em both!

Hi John...I see you are at the University of Limerick...My father was
born in Limerick and I was born in Kildare and we (the family),
immigrated to Canada in 1957. There may be a few "hofler's" left (the
name emigrated with my grandfather after the 1st. WW) around the
Shannon...And that brings me to the point of my e-mail...How is your
Gaelic? Can you translate Simply Super?

Thanks - Brian

Is the rudder shoe prone to failure. If so, perhaps we can make several for people
interested in a spare, with the appropriate donation to the school shop fund.

Hello John:

Thank you for your prompt reply. Unfortunately I don't think my
transom is quite large enough for the Gaelic translation. Simply Super
will have to do I suppose. The very best to you and to all the
VEGAtarians that I know personally and especially to those that put up
with my occasional rambling. Incidently there are pictures of Simply
in the photos file.

Cheers - Brian

Hi Brian
didn't notice it was for transom - try "Ana-Mhaith" or "Ana Mhaith"

Slightly less emphatic but essentially "very good"..

First to Larry and Arek. Don't know if this matters or not. I believe Series 1 and Series 2 Vegas may not be the same in regards to the keels. I attempted to fit a diesel fuel tank from a salvaged Series 2 into the bilge of Lyric a series 1. Couldn't do it. The tank was to wide. Makes me suspect that the mold may have been modified when they went from the Series 1 to the 2. I can't help but wonder if the shoe is the same. Just as a quick aside, Lyric is actually a Larson Vega, does anyone know when they changed from Larson to Albin?

To Deiter, Two kind of blisters out there, first ones just involve the gelcoat, the others go into the laminate. I've never heard of one going completley through a hull or causing a boat to sink. Are your blisters on both sides of the hull? Lyric had a few of the laminate kind. Interesting part was that they were only on the sunny side of the boat which was the side moored to the dock. They were also just below the waterline. Probably had six or seven of them. They were an easy fix. Cut the tops off. Grind them out so that you get into good glas and leave a dished or sloping edge. Mik up some epoxy and glass in some woven roving. Allow the epoxy to set up and grind the edges of the roving flush with the hull. Fill the remaining depression with epoxy and cabosil. Sand it fair and paint it.

Good luck! Walt

Some epoxy additives are actually detrimental to use under water.
Those that are made of small hollow spheres actually introduce small
air voids into the epoxy. This is a bad thing below the water level,
as it provides a starting place for more blisters. Don't know if
cabosil is made of hollow spheres or not. Check out the details on
the additive before you use it below the water level.

Hi Larry, Cabosil is the common name for Colloidal Silica. West System #406. Google it and the WEST website will take you to several areas including blister repair. 406 is recommended but not if you're going to barrier coat afterwards. I don't know why, we did barrier coat and it was fine. Lyic is hull # 120, laid up in 1967. Gel coat was very thick. Crazing has been a problem but only a few laminate blisters and none in the gelcoat.

Where do you keep your boat? I bought Lyric in San Mateo and kept her in Redwood City until we cruised. Now she's slowly being brought back to her former self in Crescent City. Interesting to hear you teach metal shop. It was my favorite class for several years. Technical question for you if I may? Any idea where I can find female ASA to male NTP fittings? And as an aside there is a pretty decent scrap metal dealer in Redwood City. You might find scrap bronze there. Walt
