I recently had H&L make me a wooden tiller for my H26, something I had wanted for the nearly 3 years since I bought the boat (welcome back Crazy Dave). They did a beautiful job and I spent a few hours attaching the bracket for the autopilot and tiller extension. We sailed on Lake Ontario on 7/5 running in approx. 15-20 knots wind and 3-4 foot confused seas. We were doing 6.5 knots under reefed main and full jib. Not entirely pleasant, but we had done it many times before and had somewhere to be. I had used the tiller several times under less stressful circumstances. The moral of the story is that the new wood tiller broke where it goes from being a block (at the base of the tiller where it enters inside the rudder). Luckily I had kept the old aluminum tiller on board as an emergency tiller and after a pretty exciting 1/2 hour we were on our way again. The break was nowhere near my modifications, so that wasn't it. Is it possible that with only one connection point, this boat and rudder are to big for a wood tiller? Has anyone else put a wooden tiller on their boat? By the way, H&L is being very responsive and working with me to a satisfactory conclusion, and as I said, they do beautiful custom work.Crazy Dave?Thanks...Gerard
