Broken Shaft Log - Anyone else??

The shaft log on my 1980 Hunter 30 consists of a bronze plate with a shaft tube. The plate is caulked and bolted to the outside of the hull. The shaft tube extends into the engine compartment and the stuffing box is attached to it. This spring the fitting leaked badly when put into the water. After removing the engine, shaft and stuffing box, the shaft log assembly was found to be cracked along its entire length. Failing to find a replacement piece, the yard is having a new one made of stainless steel. Has anyone else had such a problem with the shaft log on a vintage Cherubini? J.T. Treasure

Alignment?

I was wondering if you thought that the shaft alignment caused the original shaft log to break? Mine is made of bronze and that does not usually crack. The only thing I could see causing that would be if the shaft was not aligned properly with the strut, log, and engine then the shaft would bear on the log and could wear it thru. Was the log worn, or cracked? Good luck with your repairs, Royce
