Aloha All~

I was hoping my first post would be sharing the joys of sailing in Florida...
Not a chance.

I have a broken Rudder Cap on my 1979 Hunter '27.
Does anybody have any idea where I might find one?
I live in Texas but I'm now stranded in Boca Raton so it's kinda urgent (seriously)

Look for a thread titled "what is this part called" unfortunately you're not gonna find one at marine store you can have next day aired to you. They have to be custom made. I had mine done by a local plastics company. I hope you didn't throw the broken one away! They'll need it to get the dimensions.

No I got it. Holding on to it for dear life. Looking at a hardware store for something interim. Thank you I will look when I get back to the boat...

I'm on my phone and no wifi. Maybe I could post a pic here and you could forward it for me to the correct forum? Unknown it's asking a lot but I can't seem to make a separate thread or post in the other one,

Assuming you can't get that exact part quickly enough, maybe consider an emergency alternative?

If it were me (and I know nothing about the 27, so this may all be useless "digital" hot air) I'd see if a sort of U-shaped aluminum stand-in would work. Something shaped like the way staples come when you slide them into a staple gun, using reasonably thick aluminum stock - maybe like 1/8 inch. I'd think metal fabricators would be easy to find near Boca Raton, and bending into a square u shape should not be that hard for them.

That assumes the width of the (inverted) U sized to fit over the rudder post is more or less the right width to let the tiller fitting attach either bracketing the outside of that U-bracket, or could be inserted inside.

Plastic to attach the tiller to the post seems sort of not the ideal design.

You might check with Rigrite.com. Under redder Tiller Heads. Although not cheap they have a good selection.

I saw that on Rig Rite. When I get back to land I will definitely look into that or have a machinist just fab me one from the broken pieces I saved. Thanks you so much. I'm gonna try a pipe end cap to get me home. Drill holes to match the ones that attach the tiller and then at 90 degrees for another through bolt; that should hold me through the next 800 or so nm until I get home. That hunter website has nothing and I can't get anyone to answer the phone, weird right? Thanks for all the suggestions, any and all help is appreciated and encouraged.

I'm sorry. That is not the part I thought you were talking about. I have wheel steering, no tiller head.
