Got caught in some gusty weather and broke my outhaul (broke the block in two that gives you 2-1 purchase) while tring to flatten my main :cussing: Im getting real tired of breaking stuff! /RantOver

So it looks like there is no way of opening this up very easily and will have to drill out some rivets and re-rivet\screw up the cap on the end.

If anyone has done this I'd like to hear if there are any gotchas? I was thinking of taking out the cap on the stern side of the boom apposed to the side with the gooseneck.

Thanks!

I ended up drilling out all the rivets on my isomat boom, and then replacing them with round head machine screws with taped/threaded holes in the boom. I can pull either end cap off of the boom now without much effort.

My only recommendation is to drill out the rivets with the smallest size drill bit you can get away with, and do it rather carefully. You want to avoid ending up with oversized holes from all the drilling where those holes would be too big to tap properly (or require an overly large screw).

Jared:

If you are tired of breaking stuff, you really sould not own a boat that is powered :naughty:. Once a boat is more than a few months old stuff breaks and sometimes it breaks again.

It is sort of amazing what goes wrong! Like why me?!!!

Yup, looks like I'll be using the drill. End cap needs to be replaced anyway as the wheel on the end is broken. This probably contributed to the block breaking in the first place by causing so much tention. Ill use this opportunity to upgrade it to 4-1 purchase.

@Steve- In just the last 2 months or so I've bought a new mainsail, stackpack, 2 harken primary whiches, wind indicator and travelor bearings from Sweden ($100 shipping for 3 bracket looking things) . All due to being broken or warn out. I get it all going swell, then snap this problem comes up and its the proverbial "straw". Frustrating but im sure im preaching to the choir.

When drilling out rivets there is no need to drill through any material other than the rivet head which will leave the original hole the same size. If you take this opportunity to upgrade the outhaul I would recommend a cascading 6:1 using high modulus line with smaller diameter.

Thanks Alan.

6:1 would be done using something like a fiddle block that doesnt have a cam cleat?
