We broke our mast last year and have not the cash to replace!! Poor sailors, do tell, Anyway-- our plan to get back on the lake is this- We snapped it pretty clean about 3/4 up from the bottom we want to cut clean the two breaks and put in an 8' steel pole (fits in perfectly) and then drill through about 6 bolts on each end of the break spread out--- then, shorten guy wires and see what happens.... any suggestions or horror stories???

Bad plan, Doug!

Just use it as a power boat with cruising accommodations for now, and wait till you have the money to spring for the new replacement mast and standing rigging. This boat will never sail at her optimal performance unless she is brought back to her original design.

broken pole

i have heard of people using an external sleeve to repair broken mast. I think it might be welded on ?

Don't Weld!

Welding 6061-T6 aluminum (which most common spars are made of) weakens the adjacent areas, unless you can heat-treat the entire spar afterwards to restore the temper. If you make a splice it should be out of aluminum, not steel, which would have galvanic corrosion issues. You'd also like the ductility of the splice to match that of the rest of the spar so you don't end up with all the subsequent mast stresses concentrated in one or two places adjacent to the splice. Most of the splices I've seen are done with a zillion pop rivets spread over a pretty large area. Some new boats that have all this in-mast furling stuff in them come from the factory with masts that have been assembled from two or more pieces, you may be able to find a picture that illustrates how a factory made splice looks.

$$$$ ????

I don't know what your circumstances are...as you say you don't have the cash to buy a new stick, but are yoo talking about the whole thing (rigging and spreaders and mast being repaird by a yard??) I bought my 22 with a broken stick. I called Rudy up and he had the extrusion. $350. I reused my rigging, spreaders, etc.etc. It only took a day to repair. I agree, don't weld, but wait until you find and extrusion. There are lots of boats that use the same extrusion (check Dwyer masts) but snoop around other marina's and yards. There may be a derelict O'Day 22 that is too far gone but the mast is in decent shape.

reef the main and use a storm jib?

shorten the mast, reef the main, and use a storm jib? sorry, couldn't resist. and i thought i had bad luck. i think joe has the right idea if you can't find a used one nor afford a new one at the moment.

Myt first boat was a 1968 oday daysailor and when I purchased it new to me it had a mast with an internal sleeve that was pop riveted many times. I sailed that boat for many years and had no problems with the mast or sailing performance,I would repair it with an aluminum sleeve and pop rivets and get out and sail .

thanks for the advise

Hey- thanks for the advise, will wait for michegan to decide!! We tried out the fix and it did well under moderate winds, we will take it very easy till a new mast is figured out!! (1 daughter in college, 1 senior in high school!!) very pricey undertaking-- excellant sailors though!!
