Hi, I have done a search and can't find any info on determining why my knotmeter is not working on my Catalina 27. I know there is power going to the unit and as my boat is moored I can't find out if it is a problem with the transducer. Where does the problem usually lie and should I chance just replacing the knotmeter and try it out with the transducer that is already there or could that just be throwing away money? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Got a snorkle and mask?

Paddle wheel knot meters often have to be cleaned of critters and other growth that prevents the wheel from turning. Eric

Manufacturer

Brad, My knotmeter broke on my 27. I found the manufacturer on the meter and looked then up online. I sent both peices to them by mail {the meter and the sender} they repair it for 100 bucks and everything looks and works like new. I like to keep things oringal and in working order on my boat and hope it will help with the resale value. You should be able to disconnect the meter and {the hard part} unscrew the paddlewheel from inside the boat, pull it out and quickly put a plug in place, make sure you have the correct plug. After you do it a few times it's no big deal. Contact the oringal manufacturer for service. hope this helps, Jack

What brand?

If it is a datamarine knotmeter, you can remove the sending unit from inside the boat. Be fast and have a plug ready as a 1 1/2" hole lets in a lot of water fast.

Underwater critters

Here is a picture of the worms that I found 2 months after spraying Interlux Transducer anitfouling paint (at $19 a can *grr ) on the plug for my speed transducer. They will get into the corners and stop the little paddle wheel unless cleaned on a regular basis.
