Broken key in ignition

During a recent regatta, I made the unfortunate mistake of leaving the ignition key in the switch of my 1979 Hunter 27. After all the excitement of the race (I finished, but didn't win, but at least I finished)I leaned down to start the engine and discovered that someone had stepped on the key and the key was broken off inside the switch. I was (and am still able) to start the engine with a pair of needle nose pliers, but I am wondering if there is an easy way to get the broken key out (I have a backup) or will I need to replace the switch? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Call a Mobile Locksmith

I'm sure they can get it out and make you a new one all at the same time. The price shouldn't be too bad as long as your boat is close. Good luck.

Remove the lock.

Bud: You should be able to remove the key lock from the panel. You may be able to remove the key yourself once it is out. If not, just take it to the locksmith. I think you can get another key directly from the Mfg.

Use a small screwdriver

All you need is a small screwdriver to turn. I recently broke the switch and ordered a whole new ignition switch from yanmar for $70.00. The key was the exact same key as the one from my '84 H34. I checked with others on my dock and every one had the exact same key as I did, so security is not the purpose of the key. It is only to turn on. In fact, if I knew what I know now about the "Ignition Key" I would have simply installed a swtich to turn on the ignition and saved $70.00. There is only one ball bearing in the key switch that acts to restrict the key from turning. A locksmith will die laughing if you take it to him for anything.

Dug mine out

Either with the needle nose pliers, or levered it out with a small screw driver, can't remember which. David Lady Lillie

Appreciate the help

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I think for the short term I may just keep using the pliers, and I also found out that a penny will work too!
