I'm in the market for a saleboat and was looking at a 1977 O'Day 25'. The boat is in good condition except that it has a broken keel that was snapped in half when it ran ashore. Should I consider this boat? Asking price is 1,000, looks good in the water, no leaks, sails are good, Just wondering about the replacment of the swing keel.

Centerboard or Keel?

I have a 77 as well. Did the centerboard snap or the keel itself? The boat can be sailed without a centerboard but it will not perform too well upwind. If the boat ran aground there may be other damage so I would want to see the boat out of the water before deciding. Replacing the centerboard is doable but a hassle. The big question is how much money would it cost to fix it versus finding another boat. The D and R marine website has costs for replacement parts.
