So there must be something out there to replace these miserable "key holder" type rings which we use to secure turn buckles and the like. I have scoured all my marine catalogs, etc., etc. to no avail. Thought maybe some of you out there knew of something else.

Thanx

Good luck. I've been looking for the same thing all week. Quick release ball locks seem to be a bad idea, especially at the forestay - several have reported them releasing under stress. I like the idea of stainless hairpin cotters, but don't know how well they would grip compared to rings. There is a product called slic pins that look promising, they are essentially self locking clevis pins, but are special order with tooling costs, etc.... You might want to look at locking clevis pin keepers such as the bowtie cotter. Seems to be the best of both worlds. Let us know if you find anything better as the time and frustration of ring dings is pet peeve of mine - apparently I'm not alone.

I had never heard of the hairpin cotters, but like the looks of them. Would surely work for the turn buckles on my side stays. I hardly ever adjust the stays although they need it because of the rings I have now.

Gary;

Once the mast is tuned, I used cotter pins turned within the turnbuckle body. If too long then cut the ends off. I then used rigging tape or electrical tape 3m was used. With any tape, the last wrap or two was applied without any tension or the end of the tapes would become unraveling. In addition, I always put turnbuckle boot covers on as added protection. Make sure the tape does is not wrapped down over the bottom or the turnbuckle body itself as it will trap water and cause rust.

As for the rings, it was a pain to install. Never use the quick release pin particularly on the forestay as they can and will come out. I repaired a few masts and boats as a result. However if you must use a quick release pin, then drill a hole in the end and add a wire or line to tie it in place so if it came loose, it would not come out but again I was very cautios of that.

Have you tried safety wire. Stainless wire up to .041 if done correctly there will not be any ends to get snagged on,
