The brake portion of my swing keel winch stopped holding up the keel
it cranks up and but wont stay in the up position.
i know if winch dosen't hold the keel up and you let the handle go and it drops down it will do alot of damage.
i found what looked to be maybe a broken piece of half moon shaped spring ?
is there a way to tell what model of winch you have and or does anyone have a parts detail of the winch or is there a rebuild kit that i cant seem to find?ive seen a few replacement winches on ebayi would like to if possible repair the one i have.

I replaced my whole winch for less than 60$. go to eBay and type in 'brake winch'. Then look for one that holds 1,000 lbs and looks like yours. U do not have to spend 250$ at CD. Mine works great.

I had to replace mine a few years ago. Instead of paying way too much at CD I got the exact same model at Northern Tool. The handle was a bit too long. So you can swap out the handle with the old or do what I did. I have a torch and welder. I cut the handle, over lapped it a few inches and welded it back together.

handles

Academy Sports sells short handles in at least two different lengths, so if there is one close to you, you have that option too.

Leave your keel down until you fix the winch properly. If it drops I guarantee it will crack the keel trunk. I had to spend about a grand to fix my C 25 from the P.O.'s previous damage to it. The keel trunk is pretty delicate in these boats. If your winch is to the point where the break doesn't work, its probably time to replace the entire winch assembly. As I recall there weren't even made of stainless, just cheap galvanized steel & they rust away after 20 years.
