In a moment of mental lapse, I turned the wheel while the clutch was engaged. The locking lever now moves freely, failing to lock the clutch. I assume something snapped inside. Any ideas ? The system worked fine previously. Thanks

Check the Gear

Doug - I did the same thing in avoidance of a lobster pot. Take apart the unit and check the gear on the motor that turns the belt - mine cracked into a bunch of pieces. Call Raymarine fot the part - its about $20. If its not the gear and the lever that engages the clutch is simply not locking into place....well that is another and seperate problem I have. Google the problem and you will find a fix for it on other forums (unless someone else here posts). I use a small shockcord to hold my lever in place - one of the small wheels inside the mechanism is very worn and I don't think you could get replacement parts. Rob

Return to Ray for repair.

Doug: Return the unit to Raymarine for repair. I think that they charge a flat charge of $200 for the repair!

Use a shock cord on mine

My lever started slipping out last fall. I use a shock cord to hold it and works fine. Jim S/V Java

Or, do it yourself

I think the repair kit from the local Raymarine dealer was about $65, and it was easy to replace the parts. It came with a belt, pin and lever and either with instructions, or I found them on the archive... can't recall. It was an easy fix but I expect to have to do itagain someday, or just move on to a newer generation. Sanders s/v Good News

Shock cord? Good idea....

Mine started slipping out of gear whenever the a/p tried to turn the boat... right, I think.... so at the time I grabbed one of those ever-present scrap bits of light line and tied it to the pedestal guard. A small shock cord (from the same place as those ever-present scraps of line, of course) would make a LOT more sense.... they have some 'give', and perhaps the problem won't get worse. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers, Bob s/y X SAIL R 8

Easy Fix

I had the same issue. There is a small roll pin through the lever arm that sheared. I went on line and found a print that shows how the think is put together. From there I took it apart and changed out the pin. Never have done it before and it was very easy. It also gave me a chance to clean the insides of the unit. Cost less than $1. I now know my Autohelm 4000 inside and out and will be able to fix any thing that goes wrong with it. Let me know if you want me to give you the print. It is a PDF file.

I'll take you up on that, please.

If you'll post it, I'll print it and save it with my boat documentation. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Bob s/y X SAIL R 8
