This is an interesting photographed account of a sailboat being broached, rolling over, and, well, a lot more! ;o)

A sailboat is not a surfboard....

Saw this one a while back.... looks like he got into the breaking surf just inside the Golden Gate Bridge.... Quite a ride! Sure made a mess out of his boat. Guess the moral is that surf MOVES! Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8 note: looks like a pretty lousy bottom paint job, anyway!

Did'nt YATCHSEA the surf?

Overconfidence or underexperience. The surfers were there for a reason.

sailing partner no more??

i think i just lost my sailing partner. My lovely and heel adverse bride was just looking over my shoulder as the images of Yachtsea were flashing up. "What is this?" she asked. I thought about making something up, like they broached on purpose or wanted to sink their boat. I don't think I was very convincing on the low probability of such a manuever. I think she is going to avoid going sailing with me for now. Do the makers of the scopamine patch also make a Valium flavored patch? If so, please send a case to me, c/o sailing solo, st. louis, mo. Oh well, my beer will last twice as long.... steve!

Know Your Sailing Grounds!!!

This sequence has been around for a couple of years. I don't know about the insurance issue but the lesson here is to know your sailing waters. No one in their right mind or with any local knowledge of the Golden Gate would take a sailboat between the South Tower and Fort Point. How they ended up there is a good question. There are quite a number of dangerous areas around The Gate. The waters on either side of the main ship channel and out miles can be deadly. There are boats lost over The Bar every few years with unfortunate loss of lives. One of the things that every sailor (especialy ocean sailors) need to realize is that you dont get away with anything on the ocean. Dont put yourself, your crew and your boat into harms way. You prepare as best you can and be prepared to react as best you can to the 'interesting' situatations presented.

Don't try this!

This is old footage, but a good lesson, nonetheless. Many a foolish sailor try to cut under the South Tower of the GG bridge. If you are coming to visit the best sailing place on earth, please don't do it.
