Bringing in the sheaves?

My '79 Mac 22 has some worn out sheaves. I need a sense of direction. 1) How do I tell what brand my blocks are - Schaeffer, Harken, Ronstan, etc? I can't see any names on them, but of course the time changed and I can't see much of anything outside anymore... 2) Is it feasible to drill out the stainless rivets holding the sheaves in and put in replacement ones with a SS bolt and lock nut? 3) Or should I just buy new blocks? 4) Is there a good place to get salvage, close-out or other (cheaper) options? Thx.

Bringing in the sheaves

Blocks are not too expensive for a 22 these days. I have just done what you propose to a deck block. Drilled out the rivet and used a bolt. I had a pully/sheave but you can buy them from most of the on-line suppliers. West Marine sells them in their catalogue as well. Only problem is the size may not always be what you need. Pending the size and purpose of your block try Boat US, Ronstan, Harken, West Marine and Schaeffer(sp?) Marine for cost comparisons. Or try a search for sailing blocks. Steve

4) nope 3)yup 2)Sorta..needs more 'splainin' 1)If they don't say what the are, they are probably embarassed about it. If you love your boat, get the good stuff and don't worry about what was there in the first place...check out Garhauer...great quality, great price.
