Hi everybody. I live in Canada and I am shopping for a trailerable sail boat (approx 26'). There are plenty for sale in US. Did anybody went thru the experience of bringing the boat from US to Canada recently? If you can share any tips or details of paperwork involved I would greatly appreciate it. Do I have to register the boat in Ontario once I have it? Thanks Slawomir PS Sorry for posting this twice. First post was on wrong forum.

importing boats to Canada

If the boat was manufactured in USA there should not be any duty ( Free trade) so you will pay GST/PST upon entry. You go to Federal Gov't office to get a reg. number for Canada. Not a big deal. I am in the process of importing as well. I do not think it will be a big deal from my discussions with CCRA and broker.

I imported a Mac 26 from US

I brought in a MacGregor 26S in August 2004. No problem except for paying GST and PST. There is also a requirement to get the boat licensed which requires the original title documentation (as does customs). The trailer is treated as a motor vehicle and requires special treatment. Canada Customs has a website that describes importing a boat to Canada which addresses the trailer issues. I did not import the trailer so I have no first hand experience with that aspect. It was worth the effort.
