Has Any one used the new Briggs & Stratton outboard? How did it work? The money seems right, but does it push the boar OK? D. B.

Considering one also.

Street price is $700 which is pretty good for a four cycle with a REMOTE 3 GAL FUEL TANK. However, it is recommended for freshwater only.

Anyone please help us on this one

I am not familiar with this engine but if it is recommended for fresh water only, I wonder if salt corroision will have an effect on this motor over a period of time internally? I recall there are many pontoon boats that are fresh water only as the metals used are not conducive to salt water. crazy dave condon

Simple business decision.

Already has one of the largest distrubtion systems of any product on the market. My local lawnmower store has one on the floor. Parts availability like no other. Every lawnmower location has or has access to parts. Their existing motor is one of the simpliest motors in operation and repair on the market. Huge margin available when you consider that most of the four cycle are $100s more. Toyota did it with the Lexus,Honda with the Accura, etc. http://www.outdoordistributors.com/briggsandstratton_boatmotor.html

Interesting

I wasn't aware of the Briggs and Stratton outboard. Looks like quite the value with full gearshift, 5 hp, light weight, 4 stroke and a price of $700.00. Seems strange, given it is air cooled, that they specify fresh water use only. Alan Long

Salt water

I wentto the website and it seems the big issue with salt water is corrosion. They say if you do use it in salt water, don't leave it in the water when not in use(duh), to rinse with fresh water and wipe dry. The warranty will not cover corrosion from salt water.. For the price, I wonder if you take care of it how long it would last. I used to have a 5hp on my "go cart" (yes...25 years ago) and it was very, very, east to work on. cheers Brian C. CREW REST

Ok guys

Now that there is some infor on this rascal, let me share some imput. Fresh water only? I use to sell pontoon boats that were made of metals that could resist salt corrision. I have seen some made for fresh water only which were put into salt water. The metals did not fare out too well. As for being air cooled, I have reservations. I think this sounds like a lawn mower engine being used for an outboard engine. It will be interesting to see how loud that rascal is. The story continues in the future. Crazy Dave Condon

I Wonder

Could take it off of my boat and cut the grass with it?

If it has anything to do with grass.....

Rick: If it has anything to do with mowing the grass it needs to go overboard. You need to get a life! There is no cross over from yard work and boat work <g>!

Well this is bloody good fun

"Shore" beats all those hopeless buggers that only complain every time they come on the forum. I guess if it was air cooled then the exhaust could be vented under water. Can anyone direct to a site for these motors. Cos it may be worth sending B

Boat Work? No Such Thing

There is YARD WORK and BOAT FUN. Boat work I guess would be on someone else's boat when you’d rather be drinking bear and snacking on enchiladas.

Ignition system

The ignition system is rather open on these engines and would quickly develope problems in salt water or other corosive conditions. The rest of the system looks a bit crude and more than likely would have problems in corrosive conditions. Jeff Peltier

Be nice guys

It is an attempt which might work but time and experience will only tell. I remember ;years ago I sold a Toobie which looked like a small jacquizi with a big intertube around it. It came in various colors and you could get a bimini with it. It had the tassles hanging down on the bimini. You could even add a motor and literally go round in circles. I ordered one that was complete hot pink for blank and grins. It was the talk of the town. I guess I had sniffed too much shine at the time I ordered it but I shure did look funny driving that sucker around crazy dave condon

Why not?

As long as it it limited to fresh water use is there a reason why this engine should not work? No water pump impeller, no mixing gas and oil, FNR gearbox, and a 2 year warranty. It turns 4,000 rpm max., with a decent muffler it may not be that noisy. At $700 for 5 HP it is cheap.
