Looking to power my tender, and ran across Bridgestone outboards. Anybody have any experience with these? They are air cooled, two stroke, lightweight, and realatively inexpensive. They look like a weedeater.
In a previous life, I used to sell a small outboard like this. Sold under the Tanaka brand. For a small dink and occasional use they did the job. Cheap, lightweight and disposable. If I was on a tight budget I'd probably look for a nice used Tohatsu, Nissan, Mercury instead.
Thanks for that info. I'm just looking for occasionally getting my inflatable to the the beach from the boat. Had a used merc when I bought it, never liked the motor that much, and especially didn't like it after it seized up when on a motor stand for two months in my garage.
Bridgestone also made small motorcycles in Japan, and the UJM is pretty much regarded as being among the best in terms of engineering and build quality.
I recently purchased a Briggs and Straton OB. Also air cooled, 5 hp 4-stroke for $690.
I like it because it runs reliably, burns very little gas and it was cheap. Oh and did I mention that it was cheap!!!!!
But it is loud and shakes the boat quite a lot. One day on the Albemarle I motored for about 3 hours. I thought I was going to lose my teeth before it was over. But for this price I can buy four for the price of a Honda.
I also have that Briggs and Straton OB and can confirm that it's pretty much bulletproof. It's unbelievable how little gas it uses. I have mine on a lowering motormount so the vibrations aren't too bad. The best part is when you turn it off - it makes the wind in the sails sound that much better!
Bullet proof... Yeah. I motored through a sea weed field and wrapped it around my prop. Just jumped over the side and cut it off. No worries about the impeller etc. I think it looks cool too. I have the black model. My boat is tan and brown. The black motor fits nicely with the overall look. It reminds me of the old pan head motor cycles.
