the "i" dimension.... top of mast to the deck... is 34 feet for standard, 36 feet for tall rig. Add about four feet for deck to water line... that gives you about 38,40 ft....not counting whatever sticks above the mast, such as vhf antenna.
The "I" dimension is measured from the lower forestay attatchement at the bow to the top of the forestay. The measurement from the deck to the top of the mast is the mast length. Not the same thing. For a masthead rig, the "I" dimension is longer than the mast height.
The "I" measures the height of the foretriangle. Here are a couple of links that explain the P,E,I,J dimensions:http://www.cruisingdirect.com/PEIJ.htmhttp://dan.pfeiffer.net/boat/ratios.htm#rigThe "I" dimension is not measured from the bow. quoted: "I: A dimension from the headsail halyard hoist to the sidestay termination (chainplate) or sheer line of the boat.""mast height" , Jon, is normally used to express the overall height of the masthead above the water surface which is the question I was trying to answer. In my solution, the "I" dimension can be used because the Cat 27 is a masthead rig. So adding the freeboard height to the "I" should give one an approximate mast height.
Bert, then why don't you answer him instead of interpreting his question. And he didn't say anything about a bridge. I know what he's asking, as I imagine everyone does, I was just trying to clarify a definition in a subsequent post. Sorry I’m a little snippy. And as for that definition, I stand corrected. Learn something new every day!
You did NOT answer Vern's question specifically. You suggested he go find the answer himself by looking in the websites you mentioned not really knowing if the answer was there or not. That's why I jumped in with my explantion. You obviously didn't understand my post, or Jon's comments or you wouldn't have made the remark about Vern not asking for sail dimensions.
Is it that important to get the last word in? We are here to help one another. Vern was asking for help & he has the information. It is never wrong to steer a newbie to the correct website for his particular boat. Who cares who said what to whom.Happy New Year to all sailors.
I agree with my name sake, Bob B, you guys are tough!! First guy asked a question, second guy answered the question, end of discussion.Vern, go buy that C27, wonderful boats, easy to sail, lots of support from the C27 forum, parts readily available and even factory support if you need it. But, don't buy it unless you can get it under that bridge!
He told him to go ask somewhere else, which is not wrong, but it doesn't mean that it has to be the end of the discussion. And we were at the end of the discussion until Bob just posted. What was that about? Now that wasn't too tough was it?This has been a frustrating thread, because there have been three somewhat critical posts. One implying that discussion of “I” rig dimension wasn’t appropriate? And one telling people to “give it a rest”? And the last one was basically “piling on”. These three posts were comments on poster’s actions, not about sailing. Sorry I took the bait, I usually can ignore these things.
