Good day all. We are looking to move to a Brewers in Westbrook but would like to know about others experience with them? On request Brewers sent us the 2002 Summer slip price. It is more than $1000 over what we pay today. If we go with them should we pick North, South, or East yard?

Too Inflexable For Me.

I stayed at the yard you were speaking of before it was taken over by Brewer's. It's a nice yard will full facilities. I preferred the North Yard. The problem I have with Brewer's is that the management is arrogant and inflexible. We kept our boat in a Brewer's yard in Mystic, CT. Brewer's has a rule that if you don't winter store with them they have the right to give your slip to someone else. Two years ago when I did not recieve a summer contract I called and was told my slip was given to a year round client. They didn't even have the decency to call and ask if I would re-concider being a year round customer. Bad way to conduct business in my opinion. We are now at Spicer's in Noank. Great yard, great people, great owner and staff.

RE: Brewers Pilots Point, Westbrook CT

Oh, man -- where do I start? I'll start out simply: this is the best marina in the U.S. OK, so I don't know all the marinas, but I can't imagine a better run operation. They have freshly cut flowers in all the bathrooms, for crying out loud! I had a small 23' sailboat in the South Yard for 6 years. When I changed jobs and started working in Boston, I still had a house in Ct and a boat at Pilots Point. Two years ago, I bought a second sailboat, 32-feet, and began living aboard during the work-week, spending weekends at home in CT. I sold the smaller boat last year and, therefore, let go of my slip in Westbrook. Fortunately, I left with a credit in my account, so I'm still part of the Pilots Point family. Actually, I've thought about looking for a job closer to home just to move my boat back to Brewers in Westbrook. Specifics: Customer service is important to the folks who run this marina. They aim to please. Yes, the service department is expensive, but they do an excellent job. I had them do little more than the annual haul-out and launch, however. The marina has several "customer appreciation" parties every summer, including a riotous Pirate Race, with barbecue and live band following. All facilities are maintained impeccably. The showers/bathrooms are plentiful and ALWAYS CLEAN. The restaurant in the marina is quite good, and the swimming pool and other recreational facilities are well-maintained. By getting a slip in the South Yard, which I think is the best of the three, you also have access to the tennis courts, swimming pool, and putting green in the North Yard. In the area, there are also many, many good restaurants of all varieties. Shopping is close by, as are beaches, museums, etc. Doggone! I think I've convinced myself to find a new job! Go for it! Chris - Arrogant? Not!

I am part of the Brewer's family (Sakonnet, Narragansett Bay) and have to defend the corporation. Each yard could possibly be run differently and sometimes policies overlap. I am willing to bet that the person who wasn't offerred a slip because he didn't winter ther probably responded with his contract too late and thereby the missed the cutoff. I have been to several of the Brewer's marinas and have been very pleased. Sometimes they are too crowded to accommodate a transient, but I have also seen then jump through hoops to accommodate the transient. We usually travel with 3-4 boats and accommodating this many boats is difficult. My personal experience has been good. The amenities are fairly standard accross all the marinas (e.g. head cleanliness, flowers, swimming pools, etc). But my most personal experience was this summer in Essex, CT (Brewer's Dauntless) when we were preparing to leave the crowded marina. Another transient was scheduled to take our slip. I had a kidney stone attack and had to stay another day. Granted, any marina would accommodate a sick person, but it was comforting when they allowed me to stay. They transported me to the medical center, picked me up and even took me to the local drug store to fill my prescription. This was all done with their personal time and vehicles. Kudos to Brewer's. Then on the same trip, I had a mixing elbow problem and had to be towed in. Where to? Mystic. The took me in on a Friday afternoon at 4:00 and got me settled in. They even had a diver check the prop

Nothing but good feelings...

...about Brewer's. You get what you pay for and Jack Brewer knows how to run a business and treat people. No matter which Brewer's yard you go to you can rest assured that you'll have clean facilities and corteous staff. I can't even begin to count how many time I wouldn't use a head or shower at some of the marinas I've been to (and paid top dollar to stay at). As far as being accommodating? Chris at Brewer's Cowessett has bent over backwards for me. I'll pay a little more, thank you, and have a nice marina to stay at. Cheers, Bob

We love Pilots Point

We've been there for six years, first with a C22 and then a C320. We have rented a summer house next door since 1990 and fell in love with walking around the yard and looking at the beautiful big and small sailboats there. That's what got us into sailing in the first place. They work on all sizes and types of boats, so you will have certain support for whatever job needs to be done on yours. I haven't shopped around, so I can't comment on their cost. But I can tell you that I just got the bill for modifying my spare anchor to fit in my anchor locker - it was free! They also supported our friend's round-the-world educational sailing foundation by donating space, tools and labor for a complete refit of her Swan, s/v Makulu (see her web site below). With all of the great amenities and friendly employees, we can't say enough good things about the place. By the way, the South yard is where to be.

Uncle!!!!

Paul Atkins...just for the record the yard manager chose not to even to send me a summer contract..no contact at all. Maybe it is just the Mystic yard manager that doesn't make the grade. By reading all the other posts, I must admit that the other yards a great, although I am still partial to the Mystic area. Good luck

No slap intended, Chris...

...but that's what I've seen happen to some folks. Also, there may be a new manager at the Brewer's in Mystic. I dealt with Ned this summer and was completely satisfied.
