I am thinking of moving my new boat to Brewer Yacht Yard in Greenport,NY and wondering if anyone has had a slip at this yard and any good or bad info keeping my boat and what's it like going in and out of the harbor. I have sailed the area many times and think the sailing is great. Nick

Have just been there as a transient...

...but it is an excellent marina and priced that way! It is an ideal spot to day sail around the Peconic/shelter island or to jump off for Block Island or Newport. In and out was no problem with a 6ft. draft for me. Well sheltered.

Been There, Done That!

I've been to the Brewer's twice and am currently a customer at one of the Brewer's on Narragansett Bay. They are excellent yards. Greenport has 2 Brewer's Yards adjacent to one another. Greeenport is nice and professional. Our head mechanic, Walter, has move to the other one, Sterling Harbor (next door to Greeport), and now manages that one for Brewer's. Look him up and say "Hi" for me. He's a great guy (former charter captain) and knows his stuff. I'm sure you'll enjoy the experience. Greenport is a fun and interesting town. There are several wineries on that piece of LI. Rent a car (designate a driver) and take in the wine tastings. Also, while there, be sure to circumnavigate Shelter Island. It has open water all the way around. Spend the night on the hook at West Side Harbor on Shelter. Google Earth the area. It is located at the end of the Greenport Breakwater. It is the marina on the right. Sterling is on the left.

I was under the impression that Brewer's did not

allow you to do much work on your own boat or use outside contractors (fine print in the contract you sign). They may also be quite expensive but if you have the money it is nice to know that they have so many marinas in great locations in the NE that you can cruise to and stay in comfort. Greenport is one of those great locations.

Working on your boat at Brewer's

Caleb - I had my boat on the hard at the Brewer's Yacht Haven in Stamford. They allow you to work on your boat, but no: contract help (including day laborers) power washing shrink wrapping They also have rules about bottom painting. I assume all Brewers are similar (?)

Brewer's?

I am a customer at Brewer's in Portsmouth RI and have no problem with DIY. I recently redid my mast myself and just today began waxing the hull. No problems. They recently has an OSHA inspector in and they are coming down quite hard on recovery od bottom paint from sanding and spray washing the bottom. So we must consider that. Also, our ladders must conform to OSHA safety reqmt's for length and tie-downs. They have their hands really tied, but are a great operation - albiet expensive.
