Late last season my holding tank seal broke. When looked into it it appeared that the air vent was clogged since I noticed a huge bubble in the on the lid of the holding tank. After pumping out the tank and clearing out the vent line (nothing was in it) the tank again swelled and sprung new leaks around the seal and still could not figure why. I began to try to open the lid but will not be able to without distroying the lid. My questions are: 1- Can I get a replacement lid from Hunter ('88 28.5). Should I replace it with something different. 2- Do you have any idea what may be the problem assuming that there is nothing clogging up the air vent. 3- Do you have any advise in getting into the holding tank since the seal is broken. I has tons of (I assume) 3M 5000 sealer.

Did you check the vent thru-hull for a blockage?

'Cuz the thru-hull and fitting on the tank are the most common places for a vent blockage...the LINE rarely becomes clogged. That the tank swelled again and the lid bulged again indicates that the tank became SERIOUSLY pressurized again. I dunno what to tell you about how to reseal or replace the lid...but you have provided us with more illustration of why 5200 is the most over-used, MIS-used sealant ever invented. I understand that 3M has recently come out with product that'll dissolve it (they HAD to!)...if it doesn't work, you'll have to cut through it to get the lid off, then sand the top of the tank smooth enough to seal the lid--a new one or the same one. This time, I'd make a rubber gasket to go under it...a better seal that can't leak, but still allows the lid to be removed.
