On my recent trip to the Annapolis Sailboat Show, I met with Neil Pryde Sails. I was looking to possibly improve my race performance with an upgrade to some hi-tech race sails. I now have dacron sails (2yrs old). Bob Patterson was quite blunt in saying that spending that kind of money just to go a bit faster would be in his mind, a waste of money. His suggestion was that if my boat was a One Design then it might make sence. Since I race PHRF then it would really be better to use what I have for now and save yourself the money for when you have a One Design boat. Quite refreshing for a company to suggest that you should save your money. I call that building a long term business relationship. Cheers Neil Pryde

other side of Neil Pryde

Took my brand new Neil Pryde genny down after one season, all sorts of white stuff on my hands. Found out it was coming off the UV strip which looked like paint. E-mailed Neil Pryde and explained the problem. They replied promptly, the gist of their reply was that they built a cheap sail for Beneteau and that " should in the future you choose to replace your Beneteau sails with our custom built Neil Pryde sails you will comeunderstand a drastic difference in the quality and build construct of our sails". Funny, the sails I have do have Neil Pryde logos on them!

That White Stuff

All Dacron sails even if they come from Neil Pryde, North or Quantum will have resin infused into the material. That white stuff is what makes it stiff. Eventually all of it flakes out and then you have an old sail. Don't let your sails flog and don't expect Dacron sails to last 10 years. If you spend twice as much on one of those hi tech sails expect them to last half as long as a Dacron sail. Nothing last for ever...including a Beneteau. Just go sailing and relax...

What a "Pile of ___"

What is the difference between a serious PHRF racer and a serious OD racer?? The boat that he sails! Regardless of what boat, in order to do well you need good sails. Blown out, Dacron or otherwise, makes all the difference in the world. Sounds like Bob Patterson has very little regard for PHRF racing! Sorry, I totally disagree. OD and PHRF are amateur sailors. I know plenty of both and some are good while others not so. All, however, love to race and race to win. Good sails are key to winning.

Read my post

Steven, If you read my post before you replied you will see that the sails were in their FIRST season. I do not expect it to come off like paint after six months. It should not come off like paint after six months. It was not ten years as you imply in your post, also it wasn't the dacron sail, it was in the UV strip. Please read my post and try to understand it before you apologise for Neil Pryde.
