This is for owners of similar boats (h33, 1982)
I got a nice brass bell which I want to instal inside the boat: where does it go, or where should it go?
I have never seen anyone at the marina with a brass bell, but it looks great and I made it shine like glass, so now I want to instal
Where?
Thanks
Jorge

Jorge:

Install it anywhere you like. You will want to put it away anytime the boat is moving (at anchor or sailing) because you will be tired of hearing it clank. <g>

Bells are no longer required, but sometimes you may want to call the crew to dinner or something like this.

My boat has a bell (82 H33). There is a tapered bracket mounted in the cockpit, port side just below the cleat for the jib sheet line. We have never used it. It would be in the way and someone would probably get injured from it.

Mine is inside the companionway. I haven't actually used it. Can't get the Admiral to bong me aboard. It doesn't make noise though. At least I never heard it while heeled severely. Maybe I was distracted by the thunder and lightning though and just didn't notice.

what did you use?

Just curious what you used to make it "shine like glass"? Mine is a bit "icky". I've tried standard brass polish, but results left a lot to be desired.

I used the old fashioned, but proven "Brasso"
I used a cotton cloth and rubbed it in circles for quite a long time
The staright motion does nothing, but the circular motion helps a lot
I eventually installed it on the side of the cabinet mounted right above the galley sink
Thank you all for the advice sent! No boat is complete unless it has a brass bell

My H27 has a bracket inside and out for the bell. It can be easily moved to the cockpit for fog or drinking duties.
