I know I'm a bit late in the game, but I have wanted to own/sail my own boat for 15 years, and am finally there, or so I thought. I live on Kerr Lake in NC, and just purchased a Hunter 170 from a reputable member of our community. I was so excited, but am now feeling so disappointed.
There are so many cracks on the upper deck/cockpit. Yes, I saw them ahead of time, but I've never owned a boat, and had no idea what I was getting in to. He said it was watertight, and ok. I read a ton of threads (I think every single one Google can find/Youtube can show), and am feeling a bit hopeless, at this point. I've taken her out to sail only a few times. Most recently, the motor mount failed, and I almost lost my 2hp Honda 4 stroke outboard (thank God for a safety line I ONLY knew to use because of posts I've read), or I would have lost it. I am well past the five year warranty Hunter proposed, and just WANT TO SAIL
I couldn't find Plexis or Devcon, so tried to repair with epoxy and silicone, but the screws came loose on the kicker plate, despite my efforts everywhere around it.
I've read many posts from someone on a soap box, several from people who ''defend'' the manufacturer, stating it's a storing issue when weather changes. I have a light colored cover, and it's been stored under that for years throughout the winter (I believe the previous owner) during the winter.
How can I repair the motor mount, and how can I hope to continue sailing this boat without other serious cracks in the future?
(P.S. pulling her out of the water for the first time at a ramp was hideous and humiliating ... she took on a TON of water, and almost cracked in half trying to winch her in).
