I know I'm a bit late in the game, but I have wanted to own/sail my own boat for 15 years, and am finally there, or so I thought. I live on Kerr Lake in NC, and just purchased a Hunter 170 from a reputable member of our community. I was so excited, but am now feeling so disappointed.

There are so many cracks on the upper deck/cockpit. Yes, I saw them ahead of time, but I've never owned a boat, and had no idea what I was getting in to. He said it was watertight, and ok. I read a ton of threads (I think every single one Google can find/Youtube can show), and am feeling a bit hopeless, at this point. I've taken her out to sail only a few times. Most recently, the motor mount failed, and I almost lost my 2hp Honda 4 stroke outboard (thank God for a safety line I ONLY knew to use because of posts I've read), or I would have lost it. I am well past the five year warranty Hunter proposed, and just WANT TO SAIL :(

I couldn't find Plexis or Devcon, so tried to repair with epoxy and silicone, but the screws came loose on the kicker plate, despite my efforts everywhere around it.

I've read many posts from someone on a soap box, several from people who ''defend'' the manufacturer, stating it's a storing issue when weather changes. I have a light colored cover, and it's been stored under that for years throughout the winter (I believe the previous owner) during the winter.

How can I repair the motor mount, and how can I hope to continue sailing this boat without other serious cracks in the future?

(P.S. pulling her out of the water for the first time at a ramp was hideous and humiliating ... she took on a TON of water, and almost cracked in half trying to winch her in).

BTW - It wasn't trying to pull the boat out, as much as it was the fact that it had taken on so much water that it was so hard to winch out. No visible cracks on the hull (underneath), I checked. Tons of water poured out of the drain though, for about six minutes, full stream. Anyone know about the ballast??

try contacting me via this forum email with name and phone number. I am a former Hunter dealer and me thinks that the boat may have been sold by me or two others. I know the boats.

Update;

Spoke with the person last night and photos will be sent this weekend. I will advise once they are received. Person is about an hour away but the boat was not sold by me originally as previously thought.

Crazy dave(can't seem to call you anything else, now that you shared the story :). Couldn't get anyone to help me get the boat out of the water this weekend, but took off of work tomorrow, to make it happen. Will send pics tom afternoon. Did check the drain, however, and DO have an orange o ring on it. Seems to be water tight. Thinking it's either the screws constantly pulling from the motor mount, or the CB. Hope it's not anything worse than that, but you're the expert. Still have hope that I can sail, with your expertise involved.

Cannot thank you enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is literally a TON of water in the boat. Any tips on how to pull it out without simply winching it?? It creaked so much trying, and broke the line three times (rated to handle well beyond this weight), that I backed out, and docked it for the night. Can I attach a line to the stern somewhere to help release some of the weight and pressure? Just want to pull it out without doing anymore damage, if possible.

I'm pretty sure Dave will have the answers, but can you get the water out first? The boat will weigh a TON less!

Depending on the depth of your launching site, you can submerge the trailer and float your 170 on. Snap on the winch and slowly pull it out of the water. As soon as possible open the drain plug before pulling it totally up the ramp. Good luck. I hope you can find the cause of your leaks.

I took the boat out. water coming thru the back end of boat and the motor mount. Just waiting on till I hear from Kim on this as boat dried out for 7 weeks per my suggestion.

Where was the leak? In the motor mount screws, a crack, a hole? Isn't the motor mount above the waterline? Just curious. Would love to see some pics.

Also, leak is in the motor mount (screws stripped, and took on water), possibly same issue with rudder mount, and one of the rivets on the metal serial plate. I kept it moored, so slowly took on water, until boat started to float low in the water, thus continually taking on water. It took us a long time to drain it, when removing from the water. Thank God for Crazy Dave, and his generosity and expertise!!! ;)

I will be bringing her boat back to work on it next week. She will pay for expenses only. Labor is expensive though. Labor is zip nada nothing.
