Brand new rusted cutlass bearing

I received this cutlass bearing from a reputable vendor. The inside looks new but the outside has some grinding and corrosion on the outside. It appears to have some surface rust. Is this to be expected or should I return it? If this thing has steel in it, I'd imagine it would make it very difficult to remove in the future

That was my first thought too…it looks like someone installed it and then returned it.

That said, a little scotchbright pad may clean it right up…

But if not, I would contact the seller.

Well. I wouldn't call it rusted, but I wouldn't call it new either.
Can't see the internal rubber shaft support. How are they?

RE; I received this cutlass bearing from a reputable vendor.
A Craig's List purchase?

It looks like it was installed once already and pulled out. It should be nice and shiny when you get it.
I agree but don’t how you pull one out without major damage. This looks like only minor damage (loose fit might be the reason it was returned). I’d return/exchange it for new unless it was sold as used.

If you have one of the fancy cutless bearing removal tools and it is not an overly tight fit, then it would slide out. It could be an Imperial measurement put into a Metric shaft log, a close, but no cigar measurement.

If it has not been used, it sure looks like it has been at the bottom of the shop's storage bin, rolled around, and scratched by the newer pieces dumped on top. The last of the cutlass bearings, quickly order another 20.

If this had been installed and removed I would expect horizontal scratch marks, I see none. I searched under Blackfish, all the cutless bearings i saw were shiny and pristine. Contacting the vendor may be the next step if you still have concerns. Good luck

The outside of a cutlass bearing is bronze. Bronze doesn't rust. Looks more like abrasion from something else, which won't render it useless. And once installed into the strut or whatever is on your boat, who cares anyway? There are set screws that hold it in place and that might be what made the marks when someone maybe installed it and then removed it for whatever reason.
