After 15 years of service, our 7000 BTU reverse Air Conditioner needed to be retired and replaced. The Brand Name was Marine Air Systems® a reputable, and reliable provider of marine environment equipment. They have world wide distribution and made in USA.
Simple task, buy a replacement cooling unit and maybe use the existing thermostat and power control box, sea water flow, and slide it into the same OEM compartment. As I have found, relatively easy to access for items on my Hunter.
The rest of the story....
1) The Marine Air Systems® now make 6000 and 9000 BTU units. Not 7000.
2) The compartment wasn't deep enough to upgrade to 9000.
3) Ok find the best price for a 6000
.
Family help...
My son-in-laws had just replaced and upsized their Marine Air Systems® and were advising and bragging of their find, albeit tight fit, at major discounted price and same BRAND.
The Web Search...
1) I found/researched 5 different major brands to find a unit that might be ≥7000 BTU to upsize my unit.
2) The major problem was stowage compartment fit. ( oh really on a sailboat, nahhh)
3) I finally found a 8000 BTU that would fit.
But... ≈20% overpriced.
So the moral to the story and what is the Title to this Post...
Both son-in-laws said Don't spend the extra $600 and go with the Marine Air Systems® same brand they got and the 6000 BTU's.
They actually bought a non-USA knock off of Marine Air Systems® called...
MarinAire®
My son-in-laws were dumbfounded and pride saving said, "Well our cools great!"
True and I NOT condemning or impuning that brand name.
But since my new unit didn't required and new thermostat or new signal cable re-run the new 8000 BTU was really only 2% higher, Same Dometic® company that makes Marine Air Systems®, CruiseAir® and my new unit Dometic Turbo® and made in Florida.
Jim...
PS: My brain hurts from all the research and phone calls to vendors to get this all straight!
