Anyone know of a way to keep dock lines (1/2 in braided nylon) plyable that won't damage the line. Thanks Jim

This is what I do.

Jim, A couple of times a year, I bring my docklines home and put them in the washing machine for awhile on gentle cycle with some fabric softener like Downy. I then take them out and untangle them and they are nice and soft and do not seem to have been harmed by this treatment. This seems to work for me. Wayne S/V Wind Drift - h340

Washing Lines

Put them in an old pair of pantyhose and then you don't have to untangle them after washing.....

In a bucket

I just soak mine in fresh water with softener in a bucket. Slosh it around every once in a while. Then rinse the same way. It works that way and keeps the wife happy because I keep the dirty lines out of the washing machine. :)

Be careful!

Careful with the washing machine!! Loose rope in the washer can get tangled in the machine and freeze the agitator. Best way to clean is to sew the line into an old pillow case and then throw into the washer. When finished washing, take out the thread holding the pillow case closed. then loosely coil the lines in large loops and hang to air dry. If the rope is REALLY dirty, detergent and warm water will help significantly. Fabric softener makes the lines soft in the hand, but that might not be needed with docklines.

Mesh Laundry bag

I use a mesh laundry bag to put the lines in the wash machine to prevent them from tangling and damaging the washer. You can pick them up at Walmart for about $3 Fair winds, Tom

Washing line.

I washed some old running rigging by soaking in a bucket of laundry detergent with fabric softener. These were VERY olive green with mildew (got them free from a dead boat) and came pretty clean. One caveat-- if you follow the detergent directions it says don't use bleach on polyesters! JC 2

My problem

Every time I bring the dock lines home to wash, when I return to the slip, the boat is gone!
