box in bilge? Holds water does'nt drain.

Free boat has a fiberglass box in the bilge about one foot square. It has three hoses leading to it. One from forward-i asume sink and shower drain, two aft one for kitchen sink drain and one is for pressure relief valve on hot water heater. The bilge is dry but the box has water in it almost to the top. Why is the box there and holding water? Should i drill a hole in it so it can drai into the bilge? Oh the free boat is a morgen 33oi.

It's should be automatic

The box is a sump for the shower, AC condensation, etc. and should have a switch in it that turns on the bilge pump when it's full. There should be a hose on or near the bottom of the box that leads to the bilge pump which will empty it when the pump runs. If it's not working then troubleshoot the cause but do not drill a hole in it.

Check the circuit breakers

Your system may be different but on my Hunter 37 the sump had a small bilge pump in the box. The pump was controled by a circuit breaker on the DC electrical panel labled "aft sump"

On My Boat...

...which is a legend 37, I have the same box. Only it is a designated fridge sump so that any condensation or melted ice will get pumped overboat thru a Rule 500 pump and a float switch, connected to the control panel and labeled "aft sump pump". Both are mounted IN the sump and connected to a backflush (one-way) valve and a thru-hull mounted about 2' above the waterline, port side. I wouls think that you could drill a hole unless the is a hole already for that purpose.

I guess it needs a bigepump then. Its just that there is no hose at bottom for pumpin the water out. Also, the box is there so that the entire bildge does'nt get wet to run the sink or shower, i guess. Would like to cut the box out and just run all water to bildge and have two pumps for bildge. Also, am thinking of locating two house bats in the bildge area. That is the logical place for heavy weight, but i know if the pumps fail and water fill the bildge then you loose power capabilities?! wow what a nice drop in box, too pretty for my boat but helps get the drift. The glass box has a couple screws in the top flange makes me think it had a lid? I will keep the box and get a small bildge pump. I won't put batteries in bildge. The PO used two 6volts in the starboard settee with the hot water heater in there as well. Thinking of 6 volts myself. Much easier to handle. And, boat babe stories....Once upon a time, OH IF YOU ONLY KNEW!!!thanks, patrick
