Has anyone retrofitted a bow thruster on the Passage 42. Can you make a recommendation as to model, horsepower, type (tunnel etc.) and most importantly location? I've been trying to get some information but the folks at Hunter don't seem to care about current boat owners. Is this a possible DIY project? Or do you have any suggestions about boatyards to do the work. Thanks much.

I just ordered a new Hunter 420 with a bow thruster (a factory option). I don't know the specs on the unit but, since it's a factory installed item, I would think you could ask Hunter what model bow thruster they put on the new 420's. Dave

Hunter installed sidepower last time I checked. There are several models that all have the same tunnel diameter. The difference therefore will be weight of the unit, horsepower & $$$. I would expect that you would want either 6 or 8 hp for that boat. I believe that several years ago, Hunter was installing a 4hp unit. Given the small weight and price differential, I would go with something larger. The Hunter owners manual likely has specs showing exactly where the unit is installed at the factory. Get a reputable yard a copy of the relevant pages, have them inspect the boat and tell you if they can do the work. I would not expect Hunter to be of much help other than providing current spec information as they are not in the business of retrofitting bow thrusters. Here in Southern Ontario, the marina that we keep our boat at seems to be installing several retro bow thrusters per year into sail and power boats. Warren Feldstein

My 450 has a Side Power 7 HP twin thruster. This unit works well with my boat in all docking situations. Len Fagan "tale Winds"

P42 BOW THRUSTER

I have recently fitted a VETUS 8 hp bow thruster to a passage 42,It has been located behind the drawers in the V berth and is powered by 2 dedicated 105ah batteries.I am delighted with the performance and would recommend one if you are short handed. This thruster is the second size up in the Vetus range and I would also recommend that you go for something that is big enough to do the job,the smaller models will not move a big boat on a windy day.

Could you have used the same wires running to your anchor windlass? Other than the batteries, what did this installation cost?

Using the anchor windlass supply was an option I considered but after some discussion with the boat yard they discounted it for two reasons.Firstly it would have needed a much heavier cable through the boat which was an expensive option and secondly there is always the risk of the thruster flattening the house batteries when you need them or even worse your batteries flattening just when you may need the bow thruster most. As far as costs go these are in pounds sterling but the breakdown was roughly; -£1250 for bow thruster and tunnel. -£200 for batteries. -£150 for cabling, switches and isolators. -£200 for a special pod to house controls. -£1600 labour charge. I hope this helps. Paul Foster

420 bow thruster

After reading this I called the Hunter factory because I had been under the impression that factory-installed bow thrusters were not available in the 410 and 420 (same hull). The factory people confirmed this. My question is whether Dave's dealer is doing the installation or if there is a typo and the gentleman ordered a 426 for which a factory-installed bow thruster is available. Also, the factory-installed bow thrusters are 4hp.
