The bow pulpit on my 1985 Hunter 31 is bent a little to port and stern. Probably has taken a few hits over the years. Has anyone ever figured out a way to straigten the stainless steel piping or is it best just to try to replace. If so, wonder where I might find a replacement. Don / Sunday Silence 1985 Hunter 31

Leak?

Curious to know if you have a leak down below in your V-berth area as a result. My 85 h-31 has one that I can't find.

No leaks

Bob, No I don't have a leak but then it hasn't rained much here in Florida since December. Hope I don't have any surprises once rainy season starts. You might check where the power for the bow light penetrates..it generally feeds up through the pulpit. I see you hail from Willsboro......my wife is from Keeseville.

Thanks

Thanks Don, bow light was the first thing I checked, tell your wife there is still snow on the ground in the high peaks, good luck with your pulpit, and all the smoke!

Toe rail

I'm told the toe rail is the most common source of leaks on the H31. Smoke is clearing now...it rained.

I'd try to straighten it

Don, I have successfully straightened stanchons with the use of a welders torch. I cannot see why it wouldant work for pulpit tubing. I would first remove the pulpit assembly. Then determine where the problems are and heat and bend. You may need to inset something in the tubular steel to prevent a crimp effect depending on the severity and location of the bend. The diameter of the tube near the bend can get slightly distorted as well, but it wont be noticeable. You will also have to clean up the discoloration of the steel once the straightening is complete. It blues similar to how motorcycle exhaust pipes blue up. I used a 600 grit wet sand paper. Worked great. Straightening with heat may reduce the strength of the steel a bit, but I haven't noticed that problem with repaired stanchons.
