I replaced the bi-color bow light because it was not working. Then found I was not getting 12v to the light, though there is 12v at the light switch. Then found that PO had substituted a new wire for the original and spliced it to the original in the V-berth before it exits on the deck portside next to the rubrail and enters the pulpit [noticed he didn't bother with a grommet]. Not getting 12v at the splice either.
I also notice that I am not getting 12v at the spotlights in the V-berth though the overhead cabin lights work. There is no dedicated switch on the panel for the spotlights so they must all be tied to the cabin lights switch on the panel.
Were the V-berth and and cabin spotlights added by the PO or were they installed by Hunter?
Does anyone know how this was originally wired by Hunter?

Have you downloaded the owners manual from the boat info drop down? There's the wiring diagram of how the boat was wired from Hunter. At least that's a place to start. Who knows what others have done thru the years.

Don and Ross are right. Just do what YOU want to do, it's your boat now. :) Good luck. At least you can see the wiring, which is a lot more than some skippers have to contend with. :)

Verrrry interesting, Rick. It appears the 40.5 is wired very much like the 31. Just how did you manage to pull the interior bow liner in the v-berth? Isn't part of that liner the anchor chain locker? That would certainly expose what I imagine to be something of a wiring nightmare. I am wondering if pulling new wire through the pulpit on mine will be as impossible as it was on yours. I believe the bow light wires enter the pulpit in exactly the same place on the 31. Is there something one could spray on the wire that would be safe and might wick its way down the wire in the pulpit to make the wire pull easier. I imagine a combination of sharp turns and deteriorating insulation make pulling the wire near impossible.

If it's anything like the Hunters I have experience with, my own and others' boats, the interior lighting is all on a single circuit (unless the boat is big enough for two), and running lights are on their own, as they should be, since the breaker controls the running lights. I can't imagine wiring it any other way, though who knows what a given owner may have done in the past.

I agree, TK. I don't think the PO was sloppy enough to have kept the panel switch for the bow light, and then put it on the cabin light circuit. And I agree that all the cabin lights are probably on the same circuit. Just that the overheads all seem to work, but the spotlights don't which would suggest that wherever they are joined, is where I am likely to find a problem.
