Hunter 23 WIll be at a Navy base
I am looking to a put a bow cleat directly behind the anchor locker. I was looking at a disappearing cleat. Then I realized you have to have them drain in someway to the bilge. That does not seem to be to smart in this boat. Would I be better to get an old fashioned cleat and just drill and bolt it on deck behind the anchor locker. I Have the boat tied through a piece of covered stainless wire and cable clamped. I then use two caribeaners at the end of the dock lines.

Do all of them require that?

I would think you can buy some sort of folding cleat that does not require any drainage through the deck (which seems odd to me). Someone recently posted photos of a folding cleat on the H23 foredeck, backed on the inside with a mount for a flat panel TV.

Why not an extra at the bow?

I needed two cleats for our H26 for two anchors or for other uses. I moved the existing one to the side and added another. The aluminum plate glassed into the bow was big enough for both cleats...almost. One of the bolts was half in the plate so I added a small piece underneath which was probably not needed. Then added the stainless piece under the cleats so the anchor chain won't rub on the fiberglass. Then added the anchor roller.
Don't know if this helps, but might be an alternate solution.

The approach recommended by John on his 26 wouldn't be feasible on a 23 as there is essentially no room forward of the anchor locker opening. Paladin's is the best I have seen.

My boat came from the previous owner with a pair of black nylon, maybe 6" or 8", cleats mounted to the deck edge (where the toe rail would be) just aft of the bow pulpit stanchions. More or less where the blue dock lines in Paladin's photo cross the gunwale. There is no obvious way to get under these for backing plates, so I assume they are just screwed into the glass. I only use them for temporary tie-ups. In our (new to us) slip, I attach the bow lines to the bow eye using a robust stainless carabiner. I spliced thimbles into 1/2 inch 3-strand nylon and the carabiner attaches these to the eye. In my case, it is easy to reach the bow from the floating dock to snap in the carabiner.

Side note: Paladin, how do you entice the Admiral to scrub decks?

the interior of the bow is accessible (Hunter 23 wing keel) by unscrewing and pulling the forward triangular shape cover forward in the V berth. You should be able to purchase those fold down cleats and permanently attach them underneath and would suggest a metal plate to distribute the load for underneath.

Your welcome! It was one of the best modifications I've made to my H23! Makes docking a breeze and keeps us from having stubbed toes!
