BottomPaint - a year later

I have a 1987 H23 which was kept in very good condition by the former owner. Every year, he painted the bottom with Interlux Fiberglass Bottomkote. I purchased the boat from him last year after he had painted it for the season but never actaully got the boat in the water (no mooring / slip / etc.). The bottom is still in very good condition this year. Prior to repainting, would y'all recommend resanding off all the paint from last year, or merely sanding lightly to give the new paint something to grab onto?Thanks.

If the paint is sound, give it a light sanding, and paint over it!

Depend on what you plan to use

If your intentions are to use an ablative paint (e.g. Interlux Micron CSC), I would sand the bottom completely. If you use Fiberglass bottomkote, then you will be starting the buildup of multiple layers of paint that you will have to eventually sand completely down anyway.

Bottom Paint; agree with Paul & John...AND

Joel:If you are repainting with the same stuff, sand bottom (BUT do not completely remove old bottom paint if it is in good condition as you say) and repaint. Do NOT put paint on heavy. Thin a bit and apply two coats instead of one thick one.If you want the many benefits of changing to an abalative, Interlux recommends heavy sanding before applying their CSC Abalative over the Bottomkote (This does not mean to completely remove the old bottom paint). You can save about $30.00 per gal. by using West Marine CPP Abalative. Go to West Marine and pick up the free pamphlet on painting made available through Interlux. It is loaded with information. There is a chart in the pamphlet which shows which bottom paint can/cannot be applied over other paints and how to prep the surface.Good Luck,PAT

Now I'm confused - CSC

After reading the earlier responses, I decided that switching to a multi-season ablative might be the way to go. A rep from Interlux was in one of the local boat stores.I talked to him about his recommendations and he said that I should just do a light sanding with 80 grit and then apply CSC right over the exisitng BottomKote. An earlier post suggested removing it completely.He also suggested using 2 coats. Others have said to use 3 coats. With 2 coats, one gallon should be enough but for 3 coats, I'd be into a second gallon. Throw in the "alternating colors" approach and the amount to buy gets even more confusing.What would y'all do?Thanks.
