Bottom Streaking

Sorry to disappoint this post is not running around naked. I'm looking at used boats. Does heavy streaking on bottom paint indicate that a boat may have been sitting on the hard for a while? I'm guessing this is rain drops running down

Rain and oxidized gelcoat. Hard to tell how long it has been sitting. If the paint is old and the gelcoat chalked in a rainy area then maybe not more than a season or two. If it looks like this sitting an a very dry area, maybe longer. The length of time it has been sitting is not a major factor, however, the longer it has been sitting the more anxious the owner will be to sell it. Asking the seller how long it has been sitting is a fair question.

See what happens if you wipe it with a damp cloth.
Doesn't look serious. The bottom paint actually looks good,.. don't see any flaking. The gel coat oxidation on topsides (the area above the waterline) is pretty easy to address. The boat's conveniently ready for inspection and then proper maintenance.

Mine has done the same thing. I painted it last year with a dark blue Pettit Odyssey HD. First time I've used it. Truth be told, I liked the color! Looked real nice when I got done. Anyway, ever since it's almost covered in light blue streaks. Much like what you show there. Never did this with black HydroCoat. My hull and deck are waxed - don't think it's oxidation. Pettit asked for pictures but ghosted me after that. Everyone tells me I won't notice it once it's in the water. That is, if and when the lake comes up and we can launch.

It's pretty amazing how much the color of bottom paint can change after it's exposed to water. I asked about the streaks as a boat that has been sitting around for a long time is often a sign of neglect

I don't blame you for asking. Also a chance thru hulls have developed leaks after sitting for long periods. Oxidation is another tell-tale sign.

My current boat had been on the hard for two years when I bought it. There was a pinhole leak at the paddle wheel speed sensor

Yes. That is the way my ablative paint appeared before I splashed. Rain shower streaking is common up in the Seattle area.

that looks like the water line or hull has been cleaned with on-off hull and bottom cleaner. It is an acid base clear used to remove hard to remove stains on the waterline, hull, and bottom bio growth that does not come off with normal pressure washing or high pressure garden hose and scrubbing. Mine looks exactly like that after the yard cleans it after they used on-off on the waterline and it drys. I’m basing my opinion on how clean the waterline and bottom paint looks in the photo.

Hopefully this helps

So would that be a result from warm acid rain or increased volcanic activity in Iceland:biggrin:
