Talked with the folks at Blue Marine and they advise 3 coats of 2 part primer estimating 2 gallons per coat, and finish with 2 coats of SCX hard at 2.5 gals per coat. Do those with bottom painting experience feel these estimates are reasonably accurate for a 31' bottom and keel?

It depends on the viscosity of the primer and the paint. It takes about 1.1 to 1.2 gallons to put one coat of Pettit Trinadad SR (about 70% copper) on the bottom of my H-33.5. So I would guess that 1 gal. per coat would be a bettrer estimate for youe 31 Ft. If the "primer" is Interlux Barrier Coat, that would take 3 to 4 coats. That is a somewhat thicker material and would take a higher amount per caot but I have never put it on the entire hull, just areas where the bottom pant was removed to the fiberglass hull. Are you removing all of the old bottom paint, or just painting ove old paint?

Hard to relate to the figures you quoted. A typical gal of bottom paints covers +/- 400 sq ft. using a 1/4" roller. Using a "rule of thumb formula" for figuring bottom paint coverage (lwl x max beam x .85) your boat's bottom would be in the vicinity of 250-275 sq ft depending on keel type.

The bottom paint has overstayed its welcome so I thought I would soda blast it off the bottom and shoal keel, and start over. Will use 2 part Blue Marine Bottom Protect Primer and Blue Marine Copper Pro SCX hard. Not painting the hull. Your figures seemed closer to a proper estimate Warren. Both primer and finish paint cans estimate 400+ square feet of coverage per gallon if rolled. The specs off the Hunter site are lwl of 26'3" and max beam of 10'11". Using your formula I too come up with 25o sq ft. of hull to paint. I can't imagine why they are suggesting 3 coats of primer will take 6 gallons and 2 coats of finish will take 5. Seems like I should get 3 coats out of 2 gallons.
