I know this subject has been covered many times, but instead of looking in the archives, I would like some current input. I am thinking of bottom painting my C22 sport for the three months it will spend in salt water each year (January through March in Destin, FL). I have talked to Beattie Purcell, who I understand was one of the original designers of the C22 and his opinion is that barrier coating for that short length of time is overkill. He suggests Interlux VC Offshore which is one of the more expensive AF paints. I will be dry sailing the boat 9 months out of the year and the specs on this paint recommend year round immersion. He says that is not a problem with this paint and that he uses it and hauls his boat several times a year. Any suggestions on type of paint, barrier coat or not, etc would be greatly appreciated.

If it was me....

... I'd not waste the money on a barrier coat or an expensive, specialized bottom paint. I'd use a few coats of a lower priced ablative such as West Marine's CPP plus or PCA gold. I'd prep the bottom with Z-Spar Fiberglass No-Sand Primer, or any 2 part tie coat for bonding bottom paint to bare fiberglass. This will be an easy maintenance solution. Just change colors after the first layer of paint so you'll know when it's time to add more coats. You can just add a few coats before dropping the boat in the water, it will not deteriorate while it's sitting on the trailer in the off season.
